How ought we commemorate Tamayo Perry?
Explore the full story of Tamayo Perry's life and remembrance here. Our deepest condolences go out to Tamayo’s family and friends during this difficult time.
It’s poignant how often we only hear what others cherished about us after we're no longer here to listen.
This overflow of love and reminiscence usually surfaces after we’ve departed. While Tamayo might not see it on Instagram, it’s heartening that tributes nowadays come from those closest to us, not just from assigned journalists in obituary sections.
With that in mind, here are three touching tributes to Tamayo that have touched us:
From Moana Jones Wong —
"If you knew Tamayo, you knew his favorite spots were Goats and Pipe. I've spent countless hours in the lineup at both spots with him and his wife, Emilia Perry. I'll forever treasure our memories. I used to joke that I was the daughter they never had. Tamayo, you were truly one of a kind, and I love you dearly. You and Emilia were always my biggest supporters at Pipe, and of course, Goats. We will miss you eternally. Today, when I heard someone had passed at Goats, I had a feeling it was you (probably because I know your routine so well and only a few of us surf that spot). When I received confirmation, my heart sank. As I stood there just now, the sky was dark and the sea tumultuous, but as I placed four flowers in the lava pound and raised my phone to capture the moment, the clouds parted just enough to illuminate the surf spot. In that moment, the flowers were carried away by the ocean, and I knew you were there. It may be a while before I return, but when I do, I'll know you're with me, forever a part of this place where your spirit lives on."
