The historic Avery Street Civil War hospital building has been acquired and is slated for renovation.

Parkersburg's historic Avery Street Civil War hospital, standing for over 180 years, has been acquired by Wood County Economic Development. Announced via Facebook, the purchase was made in June for $111,000 using federal earmark funds originally intended for industrial redevelopment on Depot Street. Lindsey Piersol, Executive Director of WCED, highlighted the building's historical significance and downtown location as key reasons for its selection.

Formerly known as the Henry Logan House, the building served as a Civil War hospital from 1863 to 1865 and remains the sole survivor among five such hospitals. Plans include a comprehensive renovation encompassing exterior enhancements like a new roof, windows, and repainting, while maintaining its original character. WCED intends to relocate its offices there alongside Downtown PKB, a nonprofit dedicated to revitalizing downtown Parkersburg.

Before renovation commences, WCED must complete prerequisites mandated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, including a phase I environmental study and collaboration with the State Historic Preservation Office. Despite these steps, Piersol expressed optimism about occupying the building by the following year, noting positive community feedback on preserving the historic landmark.

For updates on the renovation progress, WCED plans to keep the community informed through their social media channels, aiming to inspire further historic preservation efforts in Parkersburg...See More
